Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents (iACT) is developing youth from poverty and violence stricken, marginalized areas of Karachi.
The institute offers young people free of cost skills based education to enable them to join the mainstream society, along with placing them in well-known companies as interns and full time employees. With the help of entrepreneurship education, career counseling, and personal development workshops, iACT students develop interpersonal skills, leadership qualities and sense of active citizenship.
More than 31% of the population of Pakistan falls within the age bracket of 15 and 29 years. Moreover, it is also the 10th largest country in the world according to the labor force size. This young power plays vital role in the economic and social uplift of the country. Moreover, potentials of these young people can be harnessed by providing opportunities for personal growth and professional development. Unfortunately, Pakistan lacks behind in providing educational, training, and employment opportunities to its youngsters. The country stands at the 154th rank amongst 183 countries, according to a survey conducted by Commonwealth Youth Development. The surveys also reports Pakistan’s standing at rank 156th 1 in youth education and 154th in the employment and opportunity.
Realizing the dire need of skill development and vocational trainings for Pakistani youth, Institute for Advancing Careers and Talents (iACT) was founded in 2008. The institute is a public-private partnership between Habib University Foundation (H.U.F) and local government of Karachi. iACT offers free of cost innovative and futuristic skill based education to the young population from violence and poverty stricken areas like Malir, Lyari, Korangi, and Landhi. These people are brought to iACT to not only equip them with market demanded skills, but also groom their personality through personal development classes and strengthen their relations with community through sports and other physical activities.
The institute offers free of cost, as well as scholarship based courses and trainings to the youth aged between 16 and 30 years in various fields, such as textile designing, industrial stitching, pattern making, creative and multimedia designing, professional digital photography, English language, office administration, information technology, computerized accounting, logistics & supply chain, and customer support & sales, web designing, and application development. The students are also taken to industry exposure visits for firsthand knowledge of their education.
iACT’s has made Personal and Career Development (PCD) mandatory for personality grooming of students and their career guidance, so that they can present themselves in professional life as mannerly as the young people from mainstream society.
iACT does not abandon its students once they graduate, in fact placing them in different companies and/or helping them start their small business is its core responsibility. Until now, more than 2000 young people have passed out from the institute and more than 600 have been successfully placed in different companies as interns and full time employees. Many alumni of iACT have started their own small businesses in the fields of photography, fashion designing and creative designing with the help of ‘Be an Entrepreneur” program.
iACT also develops athletic capabilities and improves physical health of students by regular sports activities and coaching camps. The students are not only given time to play different outdoor and indoor sports after their classes, regular sports weeks and tournaments are also organized to inculcate sense of team building and positive competition amongst them.
